There’s a big beer garden and riverside terrace on the Wandle at the William Morris Pub. Equally appealing is the Holden pub, with its fantastic outdoor space, and a kitchen and herb garden. It’s great for meeting up with visiting friends too because it’s right opposite the tube station. And if you plan to make a night of it, start out with a cocktail at Istanbul Meze, which also offers a shisha bar and serves non-alcoholic drinks.

CULTURE & HERITAGE

Colliers Wood takes its name from a forested area that stood to the east of the High Street until the mid-1890s. It’s home to a 12th Century ruin, Merton Priory, where in 1437 Henry VI became the only English king of the last millennium to be crowned outside Westminster Abbey. Also notable is Merton Abbey Mills, one of London’s oldest heritage sites, with a theatre dating back over 400 years. Its site on the River Wandle is of genuine ecological value — not least for its population of eels which are collected, counted and measured every week, with research findings reported to London Zoo. It’s also the home of London’s only working watermill — one of just four in the country — as well as a community of creative artists and award-winning food producers.

SHOPPING OPPORTUNITIES

With two retail parks — the Tandem Centre and Priory Retail Park — there really is no need to shop further afield. Located a few minutes’ walk from the high street and with lots of free parking, they offer a wide range of stores including  Next, Boots, New Look, WH Smiths, Holland & Barratt, TK Maxx and Dunelm. On top of that, come to Colliers Wood and you’ll find convenient food shopping options such as a large Sainsbury’s plus one of London’s biggest Marks & Spencer stores along with value shopping option of Aldi & Lidl, complete with fashion, food and furniture departments.

Talking of furnishing, if you’ve just moved into a new place home improvements are a breeze here. Wickes is nearby on the Lombard Trading estate, while Colliers Wood High Street is the home of a huge selection of bathroom brands at Burge & Gunson. And next door to that there’s an amazing selection of floor and wall tiles, wood flooring and carpets at Style Interior.

GETTING AWAY FROM IT ALL

There are three parks in Colliers Wood: a recreation ground; the 45,000 sq metres of the National Trust-owned Wandle Park; and the more informal Wandle Meadow Nature Park. Colliers Wood Recreation Ground itself was nominated for a Green Flag Award — the mark of a well-maintained green space with excellent facilities.

FROM HERE TO….

July 2010 saw the opening of the first Barclays Cycle Superhighway. This 8.5 mile CS7 bicycle lane links Colliers Wood to Southwark Bridge in the centre of London, with a pedalling time of around 45 minutes. Meanwhile, the lazier or crazier ones amongst us can count on the Northern Line tube — more so, now that it also runs for 24 hours at weekends.

EDUCATION

Rated outstanding by Ofsted, Willows pre-school and the expanding primary school, Singlegate, are top options for the youngest members of the family along with the new Harris Academy secondary school due to open in September 2020.  And because you’re never too old to learn, Colliers Wood Community Centre is a hot spot for ‘Strictly' fans, with classes in the waltz, quickstep, rumba, foxtrot, Argentinian tango and more, available to all. Ballet for adults is on offer too — courtesy of Royal Ballet-trained Bethany, who used to dance with the world famous Matthew Bourne company.

Add three local parks nominated for Green Flag Awards for high standards of upkeep, plus 34 acres of formal gardens at Cannizaro Park, and it’s safe to say you’re never far from an enticing green space.FROM HERE TO…Few parts of London can match the superb transport links of Wimbledon. For the Underground, choose from the District Line in the town centre and the Northern Line at South Wimbledon. There are also Overground trains into Waterloo every few minutes, with handy stops at Clapham Junction and Vauxhall for the Victoria Line.  The proposed Crossrail 2 high-frequency, high-capacity rail line from Surrey to the centre of London will only improve those links further. And that’s on top of the numerous buses and the quick tram line to Croydon.EDUCATIONWimbledon boasts an excellent selection of schools, from nursery and primary to a range of state and independent secondaries and sixth form colleges. It’s also home to the famous Wimbledon College Of Art, Kings College and the Norwegian School in London.

Superdrug and Boots for all your health & beauty requirements with supermarket shopping being catered for by Sainsbury’s, Iceland and Lidl. Several independents offer a wide and international array of fruit, vegetables and spices at value prices.GETTING AWAY FROM IT ALLDespite London's suburban expansion, a little of the earlier rural nature of Morden has survived; for instance, several grand period buildings remain, especially within Morden's parks. The area retains a good provision of parks and green spaces, many of them created from former country estates. The 125 acre Morden Hall Park is of particular note and is run by the National Trust. Morden Park and Cannon Hill Common add to the options of green open space.FROM HERE TO…..Morden is the most southerly station on the Northern line Tube. There are train stations at Wimbledon Chase, South Merton, Morden South and St Helier on the Thameslink Wimbledon loop line with Blackfriars, Farringdon and St Pancras services. Direct trains from South Merton to Blackfriars take 38 minutes. Trains to Waterloo require a change at Wimbledon and take about 30 minutes. In addition Tramlink stops at Merton Park, Morden Road and Phipps Bridge with trams to Wimbledon and Croydon, and there are plans to extend the line to Sutton through MordenEDUCATIONExcellent local schools such as Hillcross Primary School, Merton Park Primary School, John Fisher R.C School, Raynes Park High School, Ricards Lodge High School, Ursuline High School, Wimbledon College, South Thames College and the Harris Academy.

Or for a great outdoor space right on the high street, the recently refurbished Trafalgar pub is always a popular choice.CULTURE & HERITAGEOver the centuries it’s been called Totinges, Totynge, Toting, Tootting and Towting — but we’ve known it as Tooting since 1767. There are various theories behind the name: that it was named after a Saxon Tribe called the Totas or Totingas; it’s a variation of a word for 'lookout place’, or that it was once a trading post, possibly related to our word ‘touting’. What does seem likely is that there were people living here in Roman times. The Road from London to Chichester (known as Thane Street) passed along the current Tooting High Street; and since it had to cross the river Graveney it would have made an ideal location for locals to farm and sell their produce to passing travellers.COMMUNITY & EVENTSCatch a movie at the weekend in a cordial atmosphere at the Gorringe Park Pub Cinema. Tooting is also a favourite haunt for dressmakers amateur and professional, thanks to the host of small, family-run fabric market stalls and outlets along the high street.GETTING AWAY FROM IT ALLAn impressive green space of over 200 acres, popularly known as the Tooting Commons, lies at the northern end of Tooting. Historically it was two separate parks - Tooting Graveney Common and Tooting Bec. Tooting Bec Common is now home to the famous Tooting Lido, which at 91 metres long is the biggest open-air swimming pool in the country. It’s open to all from late May to the end of September. Or, for something a little more sedate, there’s the Central London Golf Centre on Burntwood Lane, which boasts a nine-hole golf course and a floodlit driving lane. It’s open seven days a week.FROM HERE TO…Tooting Bec and Tooting Broadway stations are both on the Northern Line, linking the area to Water-loo or London Bridge in about 20 minutes, and Moorgate in 25 minutes. Thameslink services run through Tooting station, with trains to St Albans via Blackfriars to the north and Sutton via Wimbledon to the south. Tooting is also well served by buses, with routes 44 (Victoria), 57 (Kingston), 77 (Water-loo), 333 (Elephant & Castle) and 355 (Brixton) all passing through. For night owls, the N44 will get you home safely. And for cyclists, Tooting is on the CS7 cycle superhighway, offering a faster, safer route into the City.EDUCATIONPopular choices for younger children include Hillbrook School, St Boniface Roman Catholic Prima-ry (Christian), Gatton Primary (Muslim) and Broadwater Primary.
